Healing requires us to give up the old man (the concepts about ourselves and our relationship to God that are holding us back) before we can experience the new (healed) man. I think that this applies not only to each of us individually, but to every aspect of our life including church. In order to progress, our concept of church also needs to progress – become more spiritual. There are no retrograde steps. We can’t unlearn the lessons that heal us. We can’t go back to the way that we were because our understanding has had to expand to include the new us. We also can’t heal the claim of the pandemic, for example, and expect that healing won’t also affect our sense of ourselves and our church. Just as our prayers for healing prepare us to embrace a new understanding of ourselves and our neighbors, that healing will also provide us with a new enhanced understanding of church.
